Let me preface this article by linking to this product. This article was written years before the linked kit was available for fixing this problem. Read the evaluation I’ve done on the headlight dampener kit as well as this article, and make your own decision concerning which method you’d like to use.
Many of us have experienced the infamous “headlight rattle”. This is a problem that can be fixed in 5 minutes with a little ingenuity and a #3 Philips screwdriver. Remove the 2 screws holding the headlight in the bucket and then remove the headlight:
At the bottom of the headlight trim ring (the part that comes out of the bucket), you will see a tab that extends out. Take about a 1″ piece of two-sided tape (or a clear piece of rubber tubing slit to be a flat piece) and cut a slit into it the length of the tab. Place the tape (or flattened tubing) over the slit and then replace the headlight.
While you are in there, do yourself a favor and get something to keep the wiring from rattling around also. Believe it or not, I used that fake snow you use at Christmas time (not the spray stuff – the stuff that is like fiberglass insulation). It has some heat resistant qualities, although I don’t know that it is an issue, but it works very well.
Thanks alot that rattle has bene driving me nuts I am going on a trip next weekend I will make sure to do this first.
Very nice. Worked like a charm. Thanks!
I did something like this to my ACE VT750. Just acquired a 1300S and will do as suggested – thanks for the post!
I tried padding around wires and bucket. No fix. Then some tape along top edges and where tab hooks into bucket. No fix. So I just maneuvered some folded duct tape btween tab and screw head inside/above tab. Seems to have done the trick. I used the nylon pot scrubbing material for padding around wires against bucket where I noticed wear from vibration. Expect it should breathe and not build any heat.
Aggravating noise for more than 2000 miles!
